Why wasn’t my garbage picked up today? Who do I call?

There can be several answers to this, but most times it’s simply an oversight. The quickest way to report this is to call the garbage collector directly at (847) 623-3870. Should another problem exist they will notify you when you call.

I have some extra stuff to throw out. How can I get it picked up?

Bulky waste such as discarded furniture is included with your regular refuse collection. Placing items out a little at a time will ensure regular pickup. For large piles of debris, a special pickup must be arranged. The City charges a minimum of $500.00 per load, payable in advance at City Hall.

If the City doesn’t pick up old tires, how else can I get rid of them?

Illinois law requires all retailers of new automobile tires to accept used tires for recycling. A small fee may apply. Many auto centers, gas stations, and junkyards also accept used tires and used motor oil.

How do I discard my old refrigerator?

Large appliances (“white goods”) require special pickup. Call Waste Management at (847) 623-3870. Cost is $45 for items with Freon, $25 for non-Freon items. Note: All doors must be removed before setting out the appliance.

Who do I call about streetlights not working properly?

The City maintains only streetlights on Sheridan Road and in newer subdivisions. Report all other issues directly to ComEd at 1-800-334-7661.

Water Division

Why is my water bill so high?

Water usage typically rises in spring and summer. A large, unexplained increase may indicate a leak, most commonly in toilets.

If that much water leaked, wouldn’t my house be floating away?

Not necessarily. Many leaks—like a toilet leak—can waste water without being visible, as water flows straight down the drain.

Can you really shut my water off for not responding to meter service notices, even if my bill is paid?

Yes. City Ordinance Sec. 94-352 requires that access to the meter be provided for reading, maintenance, or repairs. Unanswered meter notices will result in water shutoff until access is granted.

Why do I need to be home for water to be turned on?

This is a safety measure to protect your property. Water loss or damage could occur if faucets were left open or if there are plumbing issues inside.

I just received my first utility bill. Why is the garbage portion so high?

Your first bill includes the billing period you were present, plus an advance charge for three future months of garbage service.

Why do I get two sewer bills?

One is from the City of Zion and the other from the North Shore Sanitary District (NSSD). Both are based on water usage. The City bill covers sewer line maintenance; the NSSD bill covers wastewater treatment and use of their lines.

Does the Water Division fix the valves on the street side of the meter?

No. Everything from the City’s main line into the home is the homeowner’s responsibility. The City does maintain the water meter itself, and repairs are generally free unless damage is due to neglect or intentional harm.
